Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins dropped on the Game Boy in 1992 and instantly felt like Nintendo had leveled up portable gaming. This was the first game to introduce Wario as the villain, kicking Mario out of his own castle and forcing players to hunt down six golden coins across six themed worldsâeverything from a haunted pumpkin zone to a literal space level. Compared to the first Super Mario Land, the graphics were sharper, Marioâs movement felt more like the NES classics, and the game finally let you save progressâa big deal for handhelds back then. It later got a colorized update as part of the 3DS Virtual Console in 2011, but the original black-and-green cartridge is pure 90s Game Boy magic.
