Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins dropped on the Game Boy in 1992 and instantly felt like Nintendo had leveled up portable gaming. This was the first game to introduce Wario as the villain, kicking Mario out of his own castle and forcing players to hunt down six golden coins across six themed worlds—everything from a haunted pumpkin zone to a literal space level. Compared to the first Super Mario Land, the graphics were sharper, Mario’s movement felt more like the NES classics, and the game finally let you save progress—a big deal for handhelds back then.
